Optimizing Permalink Structures To Improve Website SEO

There are many ways you can do to improve the SEO of your blog or website. Some SEO techniques that are commonly done for example creating quality content, using the right keywords, using responsive templates and fast loading and also building quality backlinks. However, many bloggers or website managers tend to forget about permalink as a way to improve the SEO of a blog or website.

A permalink is a permanent URL that points to a specific page from a blog or website. A permalink is a web address that you and search engines use to open that specific page. Permalink is used to create search engine friendly URLs. Search engines like Google pay special attention to blog or website URLs when indexing pages.

Optimizing Permalink Structures To Improve Website SEO

Optimizing the permalink structure is one of the vital ways to improve the SEO of a blog or website. Permalink should be friendly, both for search engines and users. There are two components that search engines use to determine where to index a page: the title of the article and the permalink. If you want each article to have a better chance of ranking in search results, you also need to focus on optimizing the permalink.

The following are some ways to optimize permalinks to improve website SEO:

1. Try to keep the permalink short.

When you create an article on Blogger or another CMS such as Joomla or WordPress, by default, the permalink uses the article title plus a dash (-). If the title of the article is made long, then the permalink is automatically also long. A long permalink is considered not good from the SEO side.

Google reveals that you should use a permalink consisting of three to five words. The rest of the words in the permalink are considered less useful. Also, avoid using numbers on the permalink because they are considered to have no search value. Numbers are rarely used or do not match search queries, but numbers are good when used in article titles to attract the reader's attention.

2. Use hyphens instead of underscores to separate words.

You can pay attention to the results of the permalink when creating a new article using the default permalink that comes from the title of the article or you can also see the URL structure of the website pages that you open. Permalinks or permanent URLs use hyphens (-), not underscores (_) as word separators.
Search engines treat hyphens and Underscores as two different things. Search engines consider hyphens as spaces and Underscores as parts of words.

3. Use all lowercase letters on the permalink.

If you pay attention, the default permalink on Blogger or any CMS is lowercase. This is a general rule that should be followed that permalinks use all lowercase letters. Many blogs or websites run on Linux servers. The Linux operating system is case sensitive and uppercase. If there are two URLs, for example, yoursite.com/blog/seo and yoursite.com/blog/Seo, the search engine considers these two URLs to be different.

If the URL of the blog or website page is yoursite.com/blog/seo and then someone opens the page by typing yoursite.com/blog/Seo, then the page will not be found (404 Not Found). You need to redirect from the old URL to the new URL to resolve this. Likewise, if both URLs refer to the same page, content duplication will occur. Content duplication needs to be resolved with a canonical URL so that the page isn't ranked lower.

4. Use targeted keywords on the permalink.

Using targeted keywords is a good way to optimize the permalink structure. The keywords in the permalink help rank higher in the SERP. Because you need to keep the permalink short, determine all the targeted keywords, choose wisely and arrange them descriptively. This is also to ensure users that the keywords truly represent the content of the page.

5. Use a static URL, not a dynamic URL.

By default, when you create a blog or website, you actually have a dynamic URL. Systematically, Blogger or some CMS have changed to a static URL and some other CMS might need your actions to configure to produce a static URL. Dynamic URLs usually contain parameters like &,? or =. This dynamic URL is generated automatically by a PHP script or web server code.

Dynamic URLs are considered less friendly, while static URLs are easy for you and for search engines to read. Static URLs also make it easier for search engine crawlers to index faster and more efficiently. If you use Blogger or a CMS that systematically uses a static URL, you have it made easy. If you use a Joomla CMS, you need to configure it to produce a static URL (search engine friendly URL).

6. Avoid repeating words on the permalink.

There are still many words found in the repeated permalink. This repeated word might be generated when you make an English equivalent. For example, you make the title of the article "SEO techniques" and then make the equivalent words in English and put them in brackets to "SEO techniques (SEO technique)". If the permalink comes from the title of the article, it will become "seo-seo-technique".

Likewise, when you create a menu for a Joomla blog or website, for example it is called "SEO" to group all articles related to SEO. The "SEO" menu will be like the "SEO" folder on the permalink. When you access an article on this menu, the permalink will look like "seo/seo-seo-technique". The word "seo" is repeated three times.

When you repeat words in a permalink, the search engine considers those words to be duplicates. Duplicates will be considered trash and then discard duplicates. This means repeating words in the permalink does not add value. If so, you should expand the reach of SEO blogs or websites using different keywords.

7. Don't change the permalink after the article is published.

Sometimes we are not careful and only realize after the article has been published that there are keywords in the permalink that are mistyped or keywords that are left behind and have not been included in the permalink. Changing permalink after the article is published is not recommended. You can't just change the permalink. There are techniques that need to be done so as not to have a negative impact on SEO.

8. Set to use www or non-www.

You can pay attention to the URL of the page being opened. Some bloggers choose to use www and some others choose non-www. Those are preferences. Because the search engine index only allows 66 characters in the permalink, using non-www might help keep the permalink short.
